My commanding officer in Vietnam was Colonel George S. Patton, Jr...yes, the son of "Blood & Guts." He commanded respect and was loved by his men simply because he never commanded us to do anything he would not do.
His mantra was "stay alert, stay alive." In physical combat, a life-saver. In spiritual combat, a life-saver.
Proverbs 16.17, "The highway of the upright turns aside from evil; whoever guards his way preserves his life."
Scripture reveals the life of a disciple is one of combat. The proverb instructs us to turn aside from evil. I picture our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan watching out for I.E.D.'s (Improvised Explosive Devices), and turning away from them.
As a follower of Christ I must "stay alert" to I.E.D.'s that try to exploit my weaknesses. I need to guard my ways by not relaxing in the disciplines of Bible reading and prayer.
In so doing I preserve my life...which isn't mine anyway, because I've been bought with a price!
