What's This About?

I try to read a chapter of Proverbs each day. This is a simple way to keep me on track; to discipline myself to read/think/pray/post...hopefully daily...a portion of scripture and make a comment or observation...and invite yours! Add your insights, comments, or disagreements concerning the proverb of the day in the "comments."

A Non-Controversial Subject...NOT!

Proverbs 20:1, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise."

I am an alcoholic. Dry for well over thirty years, but an alcoholic nonetheless. I hate alcohol as only an alcoholic can..or someone whose life has been shattered by a drunk.

And I wish the Word condemned drinking.

It does not. It condemns drunkenness.

Many friends who were involved in ministry with me when they were teens are now what used to be called "social drinkers." Some of them seem to take every opportunity to broadcast that over the internet.

I wish they wouldn't. And I wrote them an open letter about it on another blog. Uf you care to read it

  1. Hear ya, my friend! We often twist the Word to become something it was never meant to be. To point it out you are skeweered by some, praised by others, and misunderstood by both sides.

I agree, nowhere does the Bible state, "Thou shalt not drink." but, in the same line, what it says is do nothing that causes your brother (or sister) to stumble. I don't drink because I think the Bible says , Don't drink.", but rather because I loe my brother or sister enough to not allow that into my life..for their sake.

We so often see the freedom in Christ as a warrant to sin...again, something it was never meant to do. But we always find a way to feed the "I wants!" instead of looking for the "What is best for those around me's".
