Everytime I read Proverbs I'm struck by how many of them comment on the tongue or mouth.
For instance, Proverbs 21.23:
"Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble."
Sunday a student talked about the trouble he keeps getting into at school...I shared this proverb with him, He shrugged it off.
Sad. It is a promise of God (keep out of trouble). But it is a conditional promise. You can "claim it" all you want, but unless you are meeting the condition (keep your mouth/tongue) it is all for naught.
Why do we have so many problems with our mouths?
What are you doing to "keep" your mouth/tongue?
One verse I am always struck with is Ephesians 4:29, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
ReplyDeleteI am constantly challenged as I think about what comes out of my mouth on a daily basis. So much that does not "build others up", or is not "beneficial to those who listen".
This one has been a personal convictiona, and something that the Lord has been working on me with, again and again and again. My firm beleif is that if we lived by this verse it would transform our speech to one another. If my main goal in my speech was to only let out of my mouth what built others up or benefitted the hearer, what a difference it would make...both to me and those around me!
Blessings, my friend!
